The electron spin resonance spectrum of a solution of Eu in liquid ammonia consists of a single line characteristic of the solvated electron and a complex hyperfine pattern which is shown to arise from Eu2+, 8S7/2 with a small admixture of excited states. T2 for the electron decreases sharply with increasing concentration in contrast with other metal—ammonia solutions, whereas the change in T2 for the Eu2+ is slight. The solutions decompose by a heterogeneous mechanism that involves strong adsorption on the walls of the container.
