Characterization of the melt of isotactic polystyrene has been started by establishing the relationship between melt viscosity and average molecular weight. The wellknown 3.4 slope on the log‐log plot is found here too. Moreover, a reliable extrapolation technique has been developed in order to account for the decrease in melt viscosity by thermal degradation. This technique can also be used for a kinetic study of the thermal degradation.
