A simplified expression is derived for the optical irradiance in the nearfield of a sinusoidal phase grating. Application of this expression to an ultrasonically produced optical phase grating permits the interpretation of experimental data for the magnitude of retardation and relative position of the grating. From these parameters, it is possible to evaluate the acoustic pressure distribution, total acoustic power, and sound velocity of a progressive ultrasonic beam. Subject Classification: [43]35.65.
