Summary Saliva samples from 319 students have been examined for alkaline phosphatase activity and amount of ABH blood group substances. No significant difference was detected between secretors and non‐secretors in salivary alkaline phosphatase activity. However, amongst secretors, the mean salivary alkaline phosphatase activity of A1 individuals was significantly higher than those of group B. A positive correlation existed between the amount of H blood group substance and alkaline phosphatase activity in the saliva of secretors. These findings are discussed, with particular reference to the reported associations of the “intestinal” alkaline phosphatase component of human serum with ABO blood group and secretor status, and the suggestions that have been put forward to interpret such associations.
