Congenital myxomas in children are rare, locally infiltrative tumors without malignant potential or metastatic spread.
Complete resection advised to minimize recurrence in congenital pediatric myxomas; case-level data leaves open optimal surveillance duration.
Two cases of congenital myxomas in children 1 and 4 years old, respectively, and localized in the parotid region and retroperitoneum are described. Myxomas are tumors rarely found in children. They are seen characteristically to grow by local infiltration and expansion, and although they often recur when incompletely removed they never give rise to metastases to distant organs. Histologically, they are characterized by a proliferation of loosely scattered stellate and spindle-shaped cells set in a myxomatous and edematous stroma. No evidence of malignancy in pure myxomas has been demonstrated.
