Perspective demonstrates the necessity of cross-sectoral AI integration across global food supply chains, highlighting strategic pathways to curb waste and enhance resilience.
As food insecurity and waste levels surge worldwide, the global food supply chain is under growing pressure to boost production while minimizing waste. Despite advances in artificial intelligence (AI)‐based solutions, their widespread adoption remains elusive. Traditional examination of AI applications in food systems has either been performed at a macroscale, without acknowledging sector‐specific needs, or explored niche solutions, without considering the interconnectivity across all stages. Instead, we argue that cross‐sectoral AI integration is critical to addressing food waste reduction. In this perspective, we first present sector‐specific opportunities for AI across the key stages of the food supply chain, highlighting their drivers, technological prospects, and implementation barriers. We then explore the cross‐stage challenges that impede coherent adoption and outline a roadmap of strategic recommendations informed by successful precedents. Establishing such cross‐stage, standardized strategies will be crucial for ultimately realizing the transformative potential of AI to improve food system resilience.
