The effective height of aortic valve leaflets serves as a predictor of valve repair durability and a guide for pediatric aortic valve repair.
Why the study?
Aortic valve repair is attractive in pediatric patients, and effective height predicts repair durability in adults, but normal effective height values to guide pediatric repair are needed.
Effective height (eH) of aortic valve leaflets, a known predictor of repair durability in adults, is being explored as a guide for aortic valve repair in pediatric patients.
May inform pediatric aortic valve repair; leaves open prospective validation of durability.
Aortic valve (AV) repair is an attractive option in pediatric patients because it avoids the long-term risk of anticoagulation, allows growth, and postpones AV replacement. In the past decade, favorable results in the adult patients and the emergence of a systematic approach to the AV partly explain the 3-fold increase in pediatric AV repairs.1 The effective height (eH) is defined as the difference between the central free margins and the atrioventricular junction and is used as predictor of valve repair durability in adult patients.

Bouhout et al. (2021) studied Pediatric aortic valve disease. Effective height measurement in aortic valve repair was evaluated. The effective height of aortic valve leaflets serves as a predictor of valve repair durability and a guide for pediatric aortic valve repair.
