Mycobacterium butyricum in olive oil was injected intradermally and the sequential histologic changes in viscera and joints determined. Foci of suppuration in viscera occurred concomitantly with the onset of suppurative arthritis and periarthritis. The acute visceral lesions underwent healing by the time of onset of macroscopic polyarthritis. These observations are interpreted as evidence for an important infectious component in adjuvant‐induced disease.
