In Brief The economic burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considerable and will probably continue to grow as the aging population continues to expand. Total costs are in excess of US $32 billion annually. The majority of patients who use health care resources are those with moderate to severe disease, with this group is responsible for up to 70% of the total US medical expenditure. Contrary to popular belief, women are as affected by COPD as men. The mortality rate among women has doubled in recent years. There is a disproportionate burden of COPD among veterans patients when compared with the general population. Discusses the economic impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and gender differences.
