Honeycomb monolith-structured silica with highly ordered, three-dimensionally interconnected macroporous walls was fabricated by unidirectional freezing and freeze-drying of a colloidal suspension of poly[styrene-(co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] particles and silica. Two kinds of nanoparticles were expelled from the growing ice crystals and spontaneously self-organized between the crystals to form a honeycomb monolith structure.
