A technique based on mass flow porometry is described which allows continuous monitoring of stomatal aperture in the field. The relationship between the integral of the light intensity for a 24‐h period (ILI) and the integral of the stomatal opening (ISO) of well exposed leaves for the same period provides a very sensitive indicator of the onset of stress. Experimental data from 2 years of operation in the field showed good year to year agreement between the maximum ISO values attainable at any ILI.
