Relativistic radial hyperfine structure integrals have been calculated for the ground-state configuration of the samarium atom by use of relativistic Hartree-Fock-Slater wave functions. Comparison is made with experimentally determined parameters for the dipole interaction for 147 Sm and the agreement is better than 5%. The quadrupole moment for this isotope is calculated to be Q 147 = -0·18(3) bn.
