Pokeweed seed exhibits a stratification requirement for dark germination. While unstratified seed germination in light, stratification increased germination speed and lowered the temperature threshold for light germination. Variation in germination characteristics of seed from individual plants was broad, and a portion of seed from each plant had a light requirement which stratification did not replace. Gibberellin—induced dark germination was observed only after seed were treated with concentrated sulfuric acid for five minutes. GA 7 was more effective than GA 3 in stimulating germination. Abscisic acid partially inhibited germination of stratified seed in light and completely inhibited it in dark.
