This paper presents an overview of coherent optical fiber communication systems. The fundamental principle is described and the performance limits under shot noise limited operation for various modulation and demodulation schemes are compared with respect to the quantum limit. The practical constraints in system implementation and their remedies are outlined, and finally the potential system applications are discussed.
