Solar wind generation of polar geomagnetic storms is examined on a model suggested by Piddington. His theory is criticized and inferences are drawn which may be tested against observation. A comparison of solar wind and atmospheric dynamo generation of magnetic disturbance (and auroras) is made. It is suggested that a combination of these two processes may be necessary to explain the total phenomena.
