savannah locally often known as shinnery extend in two great belts through Central Texas and Oklahoma. Oaks appear prominently also in the forests of the Lake States and of New England as well as in the southern pinelands, swamps, and hardwood bottoms. For the eastern half of the United States perhaps no other genus of broadleaf trees is as well represented both in number of species and individuals, as are the oaks.
