Fasting blood glucose concentration and plasma-free fatty acids of 20 cancer patients were similar to those of 17 normal persons; however, glucose tolerance and the blood glucose concentration required to maintain suppression of plasma-free fatty acids were both abnormal in cancer patients. Patients with advanced cancer might metabolize relatively more fatty acids through increases in both the release and tissue uptake of free fatty acids without a significant increase in the plasma-free fatty acid concentration. Decreased glucose tolerance might be a sensitive indicator of increased fatty acid utilization in patients with cancer.
