The interaction between a shape or giant resonance and a Rydberg series of finer resonances is discussed. In the limiting case of an infinitely broad shape resonance, the Seaton-Dubau formula is recovered in the two-channel approximation. More generally, it is shown that a q reversal always occurs at about the energy of the giant resonance and that small values of q occur towards its centre.
