Giant Kerr rotations, at 632.8 nm and at 400 nm, have been observed in alloy films. The giant magneto-optical effect is attributed to a new MnBiAl phase with a relatively short lattice constant (c) compared with that of undoped MnBi phase. A linear correlation between Kerr rotation and reciprocal-lattice vector is also unravelled for the MnBi(Al) alloy system. This suggests that the enlarged matrix element due to the hybridization enhancement between Bi 6p and Mn 3d states is responsible for the observed phenomena.
