An explosive generator offers large pulses of energy in a uniquely small, light device. These advantages cannot be fully exploited with the capacitor bank previously required for input energy. The origin and development of an efficient autotransformer concept are described. This autotransformer makes it practical to cascade explosive generators to overcome the size and weight handicap of the input energy source. Test results show an energy gain of 3.7 per stage with simple parallel-plate generators coupled with a 3 to 1 autotransformer.
