A negative ionization system was installed and evaluated in two identical swinegrower/finisher rooms, an experiment and a control. It was confirmed that ionizationreduced the modified respirable and inhalable dust counts by as much as 46%. Theefficiency of the modified respirable and inhalable dust reduction decreased as theventilation increased, and decreased with time due to the accumulation of dust onsurfaces. The mean electrostatic voltage of walls, ceiling and floor in the experimentalroom was 319 V compared with 137 V in the control room. The high voltage in theexperimental room did not present a hazard to operators but likely had an adverseeffect on the dust settling.
