Available experimental data on the number density of metastable molecules in channels of primary streamers in pure nitrogen and its mixtures with small amount of oxygen are re-evaluated in the framework of an approach that accounts for strong radial non-uniformity of plasma parameters in the channels. The obtained values are compared with an estimate based on the results of streamer simulations.
