Owing to pressure of other work, there seems little opportunity for further study of the Hymenogasteraceae (sensu latiore) in the near future; consequently it seems well to present Melanogaster at this time without the small related genera of which we have seen little or no material. While the common European species are well represented in the larger herbaria, there are several species of doubtful affinity of which the types have been lost and which are known to us only from the original descriptions. We have included these, however, in the hope that they may be again encountered. As in previous papers, we have used the same color standards and cited the specimens studied with the same abbreviations. For financial assistance we are grateful to the American Association for the Advancement of Science
