Semicontinuous emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers was studied. Significant differences in the particle size distribution were found with monomers of different polarity. This indicates differences in the particle growth mechanism. The great effect of surface groups on the particle stability is shown. Results of copolymerization studies indicate the diffusion control of the process at high initial conversions. Further, the emulsion polymerization with nonionic emulsifiers was studied.
