A rapid and very sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of the acid and alkaline phosphatases is given, using o‐carboxyphenyl‐phosphate as a substrate. This compound has been purified and characterized by its melting point and absorption spectra in aqueous solutions of different pH. Hydrolysis of the ester can be followed continuously by measuring the increase of extinction at 298 mm̈.
