On the basis of plasmodial fusion tests on 23 nonheterothallic (all presumptively apomictic) isolates of Didymium iridis, five of D. difforme, and one each of D. laxifila, D. saturnus, Physarum apiculosporum, and Badhamia utricularis, we showed that, with the exception of one D. iridis isolate, all intraisolate combinations were compatible and all interisolate pairings were incompatible. Data are interpreted in a context of the role of the vegetative incompatibility system in determining relative fitness of apomicts vs. heterothallics, especially in D. iridis, but also in other Myxomycetes which produce phaneroplasmodia.
