The cross sections for low-energy elastic scattering of electrons from the ground state of Mg and excitation cross sections for the 3 1 P and 3 3 P states are calculated using the close coupling approximation. Semiempirical wavefunctions are used in the calculation. The results differ greatly from a similar calculation of Van Blerkom and an attempt is made at explaining the difference. From the T-matrix elements obtained the polarization of radiation excited by electron impact is calculated for Mg isotopes with a zero nuclear spin.
