New azomethine‐urethanic compounds were synthesized, starting from 2,2′‐[methylenebis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenol and phenylisocyanate for the model compound and tolylene‐2,4‐diisocyanate for the polymer. The products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetry, DSC and viscosimetry. Through heating, these compounds suffer chemical modification, both addition and condensation reactions being possible. Thermogravimetric studies have evidenced the formation of thermostable products, possibly due to hexahydrotriazinic structures resulted from the thermal treatment.
