Dissatisfaction with the high incidence of postphlebitic limb after massive deep thrombophlebitis has prompted the use of thrombectomy in an attempt to diminish this discouraging complication. In the belief that thrombectomy will not only remove a fresh clot that might become fragmented but also restore normal flow through undamaged valves 33 patients were operated upon in the acute phase of the disease.
