The quantum mechanical free energy of a one-dimensional lattice model with a single minimum phi 4 potential and competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour interaction is investigated by using an independent-site approximation. Different commensurate ground states for various regions of the parameters were studied in detail and a numerical stability analysis for all temperatures is presented.
