In recent years the subject of fracture mechanics has advanced from an academic discipline to provide a range of techniques of practical use for the designer and engineer. The aim of the 1976 annual conference of the Stress Analysis Group of The Institute of Physics was to further this development by communicating the results of recent work in the field to those in a position to use them with advantage in practical applications.
