SUMMARYMycorrhizal maize grew much larger than nonmycorrhizal maize in phosphorus deficient soils. Nonmycorrhizal plants exhibited phosphorus deficiency symptoms. Mycorrhizal plants contained a higher concentration of phosphorus, and soil analysis showed they had removed more phosphorus from the soil than nonmycorrhizal plants. The extent of mycorrhizal infection was correlated with increases in growth.
