Aspects of severe burn injury which distinguish it from other injuries or physical illnesses are outlined, and psychosocial issues in hospitalization and rehabilitation are discussed. With this as background, a psychotherapeutic approach to severe burn injury based upon an adaptive coping model is proposed. Specific adaptive tasks required to adjust to severe burn injury and therapeutic interventions considered best suited to facilitate adaptation are presented.
