We present here a set of calculations which describe the thermal equilibrium states of a classical hard-sphere gas contained in a spherical box where the coupling between local thermodynamics and gravitation is explicitly taken into account. We find that, under certain conditions, structural transformations may take place which give rise to core-halo configurations. Comparisons are made between this and other models. We comment on the possible implications for the statistical mechanics of gravitating systems.
