FOLLOWING the introduction of the immunofluorescent staining method by Coons et al. (1942), immunofluorescent staining has added new dimensions to our understanding of immunology. The method has been extensively used in the initial characterization of viral agents, in the intracellular localization of known viral agents, in the intracellular localization of known viral agents, as a diagnostic tool and in more precise studies of virus-host cell interaction. Excellent reviews of the subject are available (Beutner, 1961; and Nairn, 1962). Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) of chickens has been cultivated in several cell cultures (Fahey and Crawley, 1956; Chomiak et al., 1958; and Kawamura et al., 1961). The objective of this investigation was to study the growth of IBV in chicken embryo kidney cell cultures by the direct fluorescent antibody technique.
