Spatial velocities within the extension-only zones of organs undergoing steady, one-dimensional growth are inversely proportional to cell number densities. This enables estimation of spatial velocities from measurements of cell number densities. We describe extensions of this indirect method for nonsteady conditions within extension-only zones and meristems. Equations for calculating spatial velocities are based on the flux-conservation equation for cells, and the required data are cell number densities, local time rates of change of number density, and mitotic number densities.
