The structure of [Cu4(L)4(OH)4]·4dmso (HL = sulfathiazole, i.e., 4-amino-N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide) consists of discrete [Cu4(L)4(OH)4] molecules connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Within each molecule the four copper(II) ions, linked by four bidentate L- ligands and by four hydroxo anions, are arranged at the vertexes of a square-planar parallelogram with edge and diagonal Cu···Cu distances of 2.887−2.901 and 4.09 Å, respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show an antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent copper ions with J1[Cu−(OH)2−Cu] = −29 and J2[Cu−(NCN‘)2−Cu] = −22.5 cm-1.
