European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), is a major pest of sweet corn in the northeastern United States, and is the focus of most sweet corn integrated pest management programs in this area. ECB can be effectively controlled, using fewer insecticide applications, when sprays are properly timed. There is no need to apply an insecticide to control ECB until the moths are active and the plant has reached the pretassel stage of development. One to two insecticide applications were needed following the end of the first flight; however, no additional applications were needed until after the beginning of the second flight. Once the second flight occurred, weekly applications to plants in the pretassel stage or older were necessary until harvest.
