A nonplanar, chainlike structure for the cation I2N is suggested by the findings of Raman spectroscopy and the results of ab initio calculations (depicted here). This unprecedented binary I-N cation can be prepared by the reaction of IN3 with I2/SbF5 or of AgN3 with I3SbF6. (Caution: explosive!)
