DESCRIPTION This is a concise but thorough overview of the physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical management of each endocrine gland, with an emphasis on diagnostic testing and specific treatment guidelines. PURPOSE To educate trainees and to help guide management of endocrine patients. The book not only describes how to perform and interpret diagnostic tests but also explains when these tests are most helpful with differential diagnoses. AUDIENCE All medical personnel involved in endocrinology training. FEATURES This ninth edition provides a succinct leading-edge overview of the underlying molecular biology of the endocrine system and the clinical approach to specific diseases and disorders. It systematically reviews the embryology and anatomy of each endocrine gland briefly then describes normal physiology. The overview of each clinical disease is brief but emphasizes management, which can be very specific. A detailed review of the clinical evaluation of the endocrine gland, the associated diseases, and their management follows. A variety of visual aids supports the text, including photographs of clinical signs, radiographic images, cartoons, and graphs. Chapters and appendices cover the endocrinologic management of specific clinical conditions, including hormones and hormone actions, endocrine autoimmunity, evidence-based endocrinology, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, endocrine hypertension, puberty, female reproductive endocrinology and infertility, the endocrinology of pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemic disorders, disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, obesity and overweight, geriatric endocrinology, endocrine emergencies, and AIDS endocrinopathies. ASSESSMENT This is an excellent overview of the basic physiology and clinical aspects of endocrinology for trainees. The authors have met their stated objectives well. The size of the book and the well-written text, supported by visual aids, make this a convenient book to develop a beginning foundation in endocrinology, which later is supplemented by journal articles, more topic-specific reference books, and larger reference books. This update is definitely necessary, given the rapid progress in medicine. The appendix includes the normal values for a wide variety of hormone levels, categorized by sex and age. However, the index does not quite capture all the content. It also would be helpful if the book referred readers to major society guidelines, at relevant points in the text.
