The momentum‐transfer theory of turbulent flow as developed by Prandtl [see 1 of “References” at end of paper] and von Kármán ]2[ has given rise to an equation for the velocity‐distribution in circular pipes which agrees well with experimental observations. Attempts to adapt this theory to flow in open channels have been made by O'Brien [3] and Keulegan [4], and others. The following remarks are intended to describe a further attempt along similar lines.
