Possible sources of contamination of fat by chlorophenols, precursors of chlorinated benzo- p-dioxins, are reviewed. Toxic fats (fleshings grease) from hides that had been treated with pentachlorophenol were tested in feeding studies and analyzed by electron capture GLC and GLC-mass spectrometric methods. Results of these analyses showed that several test samples contained extremely high amounts of chick edema factor.
