Nipple discharge is one of the most common complaints of patients with breast diseases. Although the main causes are the introductal papillary lesions, not a few patients are found to have breast cancer. It is of great clinical importance to identify biomarkers in the components of nipple discharge to distinguish malignant breast disease from benign lesions, which will complement current diagnostic strategies. Since nipple discharge can be obtained non-invasively and contains concentrated secreted proteins and nucleic acids, detection of biomarkers in nipple discharge has great potential in early detection of breast cancer. This review focuses on recent advances in tumor markers in nipple discharge.
