Measurements have been made on the growth of the F band with X-irradiation time at room temperature on RbCl and RbBr crystals. The first stage of the F-centre growth curve has been found to consist of at least three sub-stages. Thermoluminescence studies show two peaks at 85and 110 °C in RbCl which have been attributed to F-centres. In Cd-doped crystals an additional peak at 145 °C has been observed which has been assigned to centres involving cadmium. This assignment has been supported by the results on EPR of these crystals which gives a hyperfine structure constant of ≈︁ 3600 G. Additive coloration of Cd-doped crystals also yields the Cd+ band due to the capture of electrons by Cd2+.
