Reactive Transformation of Surface Structure

Kinetic and energetic aspects of adsorbate‐induced first‐order phase transitions of the structure of single crystal surfaces are illustrated by the examples H/Ni(110) and CO/Pt(100). During the catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt(100) even periodic changes and spatial pattern formation of the surface structure may occur which effects are coupled to temporal oscillations of the reaction rate.
