The electrochromic properties of WO 3 thin films with a LiPON ͑lithium phosphorous oxynitride͒ protective layer and of an electrochromic device composed of WO 3 and V 2 O 5 with a LiPON protective layer prepared by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering were investigated. The WO 3 film and the electrochromic devices ͑glass/ITO/V 2 O 5 /LiPON/electrolyte/ LiPON/WO 3 /ITO/glass͒ with a protective layer not only showed improved durability with continuous potential cycling, but also demonstrated faster bleaching-coloring response rates and a higher coloration efficiency. Our results demonstrated that LiPON layers are electrochemically stable, enhance the electrochromic properties of Li ion-conducting electrolytes, and can be used as a protective layer for electrochromic devices.
