The effect of the micrometer and nanometer magnesium hydroxide (MH) as fillers on the thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride) was investigated by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique. The poly(vinyl chloride)/magnesium hydroxide (PVC/MH) composites were prepared by the solution blending method, respectively. The results showed that the PVC/MH composites with the nanometer MH filler (PVC/nMH) had the better thermal stability than that with the micrometer MH filler (PVC/uMH) with the same amount of MH filler added. And the initiating temperature (Ti) of the dehydrochlorination reaction increased with the amount of MH filler added. A facile chemical analysis method was developed to examine the thermal stabilising mechanism of MH fillers in the PVC/MH composites after the samples pyrolysed.
