INACTIVATION OF NICOTINAMIDECALJTOURNAL 197 useful mrthod for analysing the vitamin requirements of various organogenetic processes in the developing embryo, and it is interesting that the nicotinamide requirements of the embryo-mother system studied appeared to vary from one gestational day to another. This approach might profitably be extended to other compounds as well.3. Though the standard dose of 6-aminonicotinamide without protection produces marked weakness within 6 to 12 hours (Pinsky and Fraser, 1959), the two-hour treatment with 6-aminonicotinamide, followed by a protective dose of nicotinamide, does not produce any signs of distress in the mother.Nevertheless, this brief exposu-re is highly teratogenic in mice.4. Though it is unwise to extrapolate experimental findings in mice to human beings, our results emphasize the need for careful nutritional and metabolic studies of mother and cmbryo in normal pregnancies and in those that give risc to malformations.
