The in vitro properties of the DNA polymerase of E. coli and of E. coli infected with T4 phage are not easily reconciled with the requirements for bacterial chromosome replication. This problem has been discussed by Goulian et al. (1967), by Cairns and Davern (1967), and in this volume by several others.
