SUMMARY(1) The enzymes oxidizing C2-C7 and C16-C18 fatty acids in Spicaria violacea are of constitutive nature.(2) Fatty acids of chain length from C9 to C13 drastically inhibit O2 uptake regardless of the substrates to which the cells have previously been exposed.(3) The data suggest that at least two activating enzymes with an as yet undetermined specificity as to chain-length relationship are involved in fatty-acid oxidations by the mold.
